How to work out your reel size

Measure straight across the widest point of the spool, through the middle — not the length of the film inside it. That measurement in inches is your reel size.

If you would rather not measure, take a photo of your reels next to a ruler, or just the reels on their own, and send it through. We will work it out for you before you order.

Why film is priced differently

Film reels are not priced on the tape tier. A larger reel holds far more film and takes considerably longer to clean and run, so each size has its own flat rate.

This also means film does not count towards the number of items in your tape order, and your tape order does not change the rate on your film. The two are worked out separately on the same invoice.

You do not need to know what is on them

Almost nobody still owns a projector, so most reels arrive completely unidentified. That is normal, and it is why nothing is paid upfront.

Send them in. Anything blank or unrecoverable is not charged and does not appear on your invoice.

Reels with no labels

If your reels have handwritten labels, leave them on — they often turn out to be the only record of what the footage is, and we will use them when naming your files.

What we cannot take

16mm film

We convert 8mm and Super 8 only. 16mm is not something we can do at the moment, though it is on the list of things we are looking to add.

Reel-to-reel audio tape is a different thing entirely and we do take it — that is priced at $35 per reel on the audio page.

What you get back

Your film is transferred to MP4 or MOV, or to DVD if that suits you better, and delivered on a branded USB for $15, on a drive you supply, or as a Google Drive link.

Your original reels come back to you either way, in the same condition they arrived.

Questions about film reel conversion

How do I work out what size my reels are?

Measure across the widest point of the spool, through the middle, not the length of the film itself. A tape measure across the diameter is all you need. If you would rather not, send us a photo and we will tell you.

Why is film priced differently from tape?

A reel of film has to be cleaned and run through frame by frame, and a larger reel holds far more film. It takes considerably longer than transferring a tape, so it sits on its own price scale rather than the tape tier.

Does film count towards my tape order total?

No. Film reels are priced individually by reel size and are counted separately from tapes, discs and audio. Sending film does not change the rate on your tapes, and sending tapes does not change the rate on your film.

Do you take 16mm film?

Not at the moment. Get Memories Back converts 8mm and Super 8. 16mm is something we are looking to add in future.

I have no idea what is on the reels.

Almost nobody does, because hardly anyone still owns a projector. Send them in. Anything blank or unrecoverable is not charged.

What do I get back?

MP4, MOV or DVD, on a branded USB for $15, on a drive you supply, or as a Google Drive link. Your original reels are returned to you either way.
