VHS and VHS-C

The most common request by a distance, and the format that holds up best. Tapes that look ruined, visible mould, a musty smell, years in a damp garage can usually be cleaned and transferred successfully. That cleaning is included in the price rather than charged on top.

VHS-C is the small cassette that slotted into a full-size adapter. You do not need to find the adapter. Send the small tapes as they are.

Video8, Hi8 and Digital8

The small camcorder cassettes that recorded most family holidays and school events from the late eighties onwards. Dry, reasonably stored tapes transfer normally and at the same price as everything else on this page.

One thing we will not do

We do not attempt mouldy or water damaged 8mm tape that is Video8, Hi8 and Digital8. The tape is far thinner than VHS and the failure rate on damaged 8mm is high enough that trying can destroy the recording completely.

That is a deliberate policy, not a lack of capability. When there is only one copy of something in the world, we would rather hand it back untouched than be the reason it is gone. If tapes arrive in that condition we will tell you, return them, and not charge for them.

MiniDV, DVCAM, Betamax and S-VHS

Less common, same process, same price. Betamax in particular tends to arrive from people who were told years ago that nobody could read it any more.

Everything is transferred to MP4 or MOV, or to DVD if that suits you better. A unit is one tape regardless of its length, so a three hour tape costs the same as a thirty minute one.

Questions about video tape conversion

My VHS tapes are mouldy. Are they gone?

Usually not. VHS and VHS-C respond well to cleaning, and that cleaning is included in the unit price rather than charged separately.

Can mouldy or water damaged Hi8 tapes be recovered?

Get Memories Back does not attempt them. 8mm tape is far thinner than VHS and the failure rate on damaged tapes is high enough that trying risks destroying the recording. Undamaged Video8, Hi8 and Digital8 tapes transfer normally.

Do I need the VHS-C adapter?

No. Send the small cassettes on their own.

Does a longer tape cost more?

No. A unit is one tape regardless of its length, so a three hour tape and a thirty minute tape cost the same.

My tapes came from overseas. Will they work?

Yes. Get Memories Back handles both PAL and NTSC.

I do not know what is on my tapes.

That is completely normal, and it is why nothing is paid upfront. Send them in, and anything blank is not charged. Add a note to your order telling us you are not sure.
